Youth United Celebrated World Environment Day. On the occasion of World Environment Day Youth United conducted a series of events. The events were targeted at all sections of society. Keeping in mind the theme on 4th June, the students at Rajasthan Bhawan (Sector 33A CHD) and Pracheen Kala Kendra (Sector 35B Chandigarh) summer workshops were explained the various ways in which environment degradation can be prevented. An interactive session was held with these kids. This was followed by a poster making competition on the same theme. The students were divided into three categories 3-6yrs, 7-10yrs and 11-15yrs. ![]() On 5th June an awareness camp and rally, street play and oath taking ceremony were held at Sukhna Lake from 6pm to 8pm on the UNEP’s 2008 theme “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”. The event started with a rally which was followed by a play, performed by students of CEVA on the theme of pollution, ploythene bags etc. Pamphlets were distributed amongst people making them aware of the various ways to promote low carbon economy, use energy efficient resources, eco friendly consumption etc. The event concluded with an oath taking ceremony given by S.K. Sharma renowned environmentalist and a prize distribution ceremony. Niharika Rai (IAS, Registering and Licensing Authority and SDM(East)), the chief guest at the rally, distributed the prizes amongst the winners of the poster making competition (9 prizes were distributed in all, 3 amongst the winners of each group). She conveyed the message that all citizens should feel responsible towards the environment and take preventive and corrective measures to prevent any further environmental degradation and ensure a prosperous future for themselves. Other dignitaries present at the rally were Madhur Verma ASP, Chandigarh Police. They all appreciated the effort made by Youth United for holding the rally keeping up with UNEP’s 2008 theme.
