Nalini is a women undergoing life imprisonment in Vellore jail for playing a major role in assassin of Rajiv Gandhi. She was awarded death penalty in 1991 but on the intervention of congress party and Sonia Gandhi (widow of Rajiv Gandhi), the death penalty was converted to life imprisonment.
Her term ended in year 2005. In 2007, she applied to state court but her petition was rejected. In 2008 she applied to Madras High Court. High Court gave order to state government to form an advisory board and consider her petition. As the state government did not form a board, Nalini asked court to form a board and submit a report to the state.
When petition came up in Madras High Court , they postponed the hearing date to October 6, 2009. Meanwhile Nalini have started her fast and according to her she continue it till she is released. She informed the jail officials by writing in a letter.
